Community Builders Program

Strong Communities Start with Housing for Everyone!

Community Builders

We all want our communities to be vibrant and prosperous places. We want opportunities for our children and safe, sustainable choices for our elders, employees and ourselves. To realize this vision, we need to address our most pressing challenge:

The cost of renting or buying a home is too expensive in San Mateo County. Too many people do not have the opportunity to buy or rent a home they can afford, and so our neighbors, co-workers and families cannot afford to live here.

Housing Leadership Council brings together information and advocates to help local governments create policies and programs that will meet San Mateo County's need for housing into the future.

Community Builders Help Empower Your Communities!

The Housing Leadership Council (HLC) of San Mateo County is working with members of your city to enable them to effectively engage with local government and express their desire for healthy, sustainable communities that everyone can afford to live in. HLC’s Community Builders Program is fostering community-based leadership that is informed and educated about today’s housing issues, so they can:

  • Create more effective zoning plans and regulations through local Housing Element processes
  • Encourage better use of our limited space for development
  • Promote housing policies that ensure housing availability for all income levels
  • Ensure that local planning integrates Smart Growth practices such as transit-oriented development and other policies and programs to create a sustainable community

Get Involved!
