Carpe Diem: Building for the Future of San Mateo County

Can housing play a central role in our economic recovery here in San Mateo County? If creating new housing is to happen here, new state, regional, and local planning pattern laws will need to transform the way housing will be located and built. During this conference, the work that is being conducted here in San Mateo County will inspire policy makers, practitioners, and advocates with the latest information on housing policies and trends in order to meet and work together.

The recent downturn may be viewed as a transformative moment for San Mateo County where state, regional, and local processes work to change the way housing is located and built. More integrated approaches to community planning and design will be emphasized with the goal of creating more compact, walkable communities that do not require the use of a car and providing the number of new housing units the area sorely needs. The Bay Area’s Sustainable Communities Strategy and the peninsula’s Grand Boulevard Initiative are examples of such integrated efforts. While many of these goals have their roots in environmental policy, they touch several facets of our community and help meet the needs of our citizens as predicted demographic changes take effect. In doing so, we will ensure the vibrancy of San Mateo County for years to come.

In this context, Housing Leadership Day 2011 will delve into numerous questions: “What do we need to do over the next ten years, that we can start now, that builds on what we've learned and accomplished over the last ten years? How will we deliver an abundance housing opportunities along the Grand Boulevard corridor (including adjacent downtowns)? How can we make these targeted growth areas attractive to seniors who want to stay in county, but can just as well decamp to other areas, which may stretch family ties, break civic ties, and remove potential investing capital that could be invested here to create a more livable, sustainable Peninsula?”
