HLC works to accelerate the creation of new homes at all affordability levels in San Mateo County to create opportunities and a viable quality of life.
What HLC Does
- Develop a constituency for new homes by organizing and informing its own membership and by recruiting and training citizen leaders.
- Develop financial resources for new homes by staffing the Housing Endowment And Regional Trust (HEART).
- Promote development of high-quality, inclusive, accessible, and environmentally sustainable homes.
- Promote land-use plans that accommodate the community’s natural and economic growth and housing developments that fulfill those plans.
About Housing Leadership Council
HLC is a membership organization founded in 2001. With some 70 organizational and 50 individual members, HLC represents community organizations, nonprofit and for-profit developers, human service providers, Realtors, labor unions, and faith groups. Join us!
HLC’s Accomplishments
- Endorsed creation of 3,556 new homes, of which 936 (26%) were affordable
- Managed development of the Housing Endowment And Regional Trust, which has invested $4 million in nearly 400 new homes; raised a total of $8 million in public and private funds to date; and is conducting a $3 million private sector fundraising campaign.
- Founded Housing Leadership Day as annual policy conference, 2002
- Founded Affordable Housing Week San Mateo County in 2003; to date some 3,200 people have participated in 40 events in four years.
- Created searchable website database of affordable homes in the county
- Developed database of local housing advocates; now has 3,000 names, with approximately 1,000 email addresses.
- Raised profile of housing issue through significant public outreach: press articles, letters to the editor, public service announcements, speaking engagements, and appearances on local cable TV shows.
