Housing Trust Fund remains in Senate housing bill
June 20, 2008 – 2:24 pmThis just in from the National Low-Income Housing Coalition:
Senate To Continue Action on Housing Bill on June 24
Amendments Likely, Stay Tuned
Thanks to your action, by a strong bipartisan vote of 77-11, the U.S. Senate rejected an attempt to gut the dedicated revenue source for the National Housing Trust Fund. Senator Christopher Bond’s (R-MO) June 19 proposed amendment to the Housing and Economic Recovery Act (formerly called the Federal Housing Finance Reform Act) would have made contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to the National Housing Trust Fund voluntary, not mandatory, effectively killing the fund.
This vote demonstrated a remarkable degree of bipartisan support for the National Housing Trust Fund, and bodes well for its continued inclusion in the larger housing bill.
The Senate is expected to continue work on the bill as early as Tuesday, June 24. Other amendments may be offered then. NLIHC will monitor amendments closely and alert you as soon as possible if any action by you is needed.
Please contact your senators to urge them to support the overall bill, the Housing and Economic Recovery Act.
